What to expect
At speech and language therapy our patients can expect to receive the highest quality of service for their speech, language and communication needs. Following an initial referral our patients can expect:
- An initial appointment and assessment.
- An individualised treatment programme.
- Advice and support.
- Reviews, reports and discharge.
Initial appointment and assessment
Following a new referral we offer an initial appointment to discuss a patient's speech and language therapy needs and also any concerns they may have. An initial appointment can be made at a time and location that is convenient for the patient. An initial appointment will also involve an assessment of the patient's speech, language and communication abilities. We can also assess individuals with eating, drinking and swallowing problems. An initial appointment will include:
- A general discussion with the patient or their parents / carers about their speech and language difficulties and any other concerns they may have.
- A case history including any relevant medical or family information.
- A general observation of the patient's communication and interaction skills.
- A more detailed assessment of the patient's speech, language, communication and / eating and drinking abilities.
- A discussion regarding the assessment findings and the appropriate course of action based on these findings.
An initial assessment will determine whether a patient has a speech and language difficulty and also the severity of their difficulties. Following an initial assessment we will provide the patient and their parents / carers with further advice and if required will offer an individualised treatment plan. We will also provide a report on the information gathered from the initial assessment.
Individualised treatment plan
Each patient's treatment plan will be individualised to their specific needs and abilities. There are a number of treatment options available and the speech and language therapist will make a joint decision with the patient on the best treatment plan for them. Treatment options available at speech and language therapy include:
- One to One Therapy
- Therapy Programmes
- Consultative Role
- Advice and Education
- Early Intervention

Based on assessment findings each patient will be offered the most appropriate treatment plan to suit their specific needs. Treatment can be carried out in the home, school or clinic settings to accommodate the patient's specific needs and requirements. Appointments will also be flexible around the availability of the patient.
Advice and support
The speech and language therapist will give advice and support to the patient and their parents / carers on many aspects their treatment plan. The speech and language therapist may also work closely with other professionals involved in the patient's care to ensure the patient receives the best possible service.
Reviews, reports and discharge
Throughout the treatment process the speech and language therapist will continue to review and provide reports on a patient's progress. The speech and language therapist can additionally provide specialist reports including:
The speech and language therapist will set shared goals with the patient and / their parents or carers regarding their specific speech, language and communication needs. These goals will be reviewed on a regular basis. Once the patient has reached their full potential in speech and language therapy they will be discharged from therapy.
