What is problem solving?

Problem solving is a higher order cognitive (mental) process. Problem solving involves discovering, analysing and solving a problem. The end goal of problem solving is to create a solution which will resolve the problem.

Individuals can often have difficulties with problem solving. Our speech and language therapists will help to develop techniques which can support the individual's ability to problem solve more independently.

Having difficulties with problem solving can impact on an individual's life in many ways; this will depend on the severity of the individual's problem, their underlying cause and also their overall ability. Individuals with problem solving difficulties may have difficulties in making decisions and acting appropriately in certain situations to overcome problems. Problem solving difficulties may affect the individual's ability to communicate effectively with others, social skills and ability to effectively carry out everyday tasks. Having a problem solving difficulty can impact on an individual's life in a variety of settings, including the home, work, school and social environments. Having a difficulty in problem solving may additionally cause an individual to become frustrated and may cause emotional problems such as lack of confidence and low self-esteem.
