Improved Speech

Our speech and language therapists improve and develop speech, language and communication. When working with individuals who have difficulties with their speech, our speech and language therapists will work on improving their speech clarity and intelligibility (how well they are understood by others).

What is speech?

Speech is a vocal form of communication consisting of spoken sounds and words which convey a message / information to the listener.

How can a speech problem impact on an individual's life?

An individual with a speech problem will usually have less intelligible speech and / reduced clarity when speaking. A speech problem may appear as a mild or severe form and can have a dramatic impact on an individual's life. A speech production problem may affect an individual's ability to communicate effectively with others around them. A speech production problem may lead to difficulties in the social, work and educational environments. As a result, a speech production problem can lead to low-self-esteem and lack of confidence when communicating. The impacts of a speech problem will affect each individual in different ways.

How can speech and language therapy improve speech?

Speech and language therapy will work on improving the intelligibility and clarity of an individual's speech. Speech and language therapy will maximise the individual's ability to communicate effectively. There are a variety of ways which speech and language therapy can help to improve speech problems; this will depend on the severity of the individual's problem and also the underlying cause or condition. The speech and language therapist will improve speech problems through:

  • Articulation therapy.
  • Phonological therapy.
  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication

What are the benefits of improving speech?

There are many benefits of improving an individual's speech. The main benefit of speech and language therapy is helping the individual to communicate more effectively. Other benefits include:

  • Allowing the individual to communicate more effectively with others around them.
  • Emotional benefits e.g. increasing self-esteem and self-confidence when communicating.
  • Allowing the individual to participate in everyday tasks which require effective speech / communication.
  • Increasing the individual's ability to participate in social activities.
  • Improving their quality of life.
  • Helping them to access their educational and work environments to their full potential.

Our speech and language therapists work with both children and adults with speech problems and will aim to improve their ability to communicate more effectively.
