Improved voice

Speech and language therapy will help to develop and improve speech, language and communication difficulties. When working with individuals who have voice problems, our speech and language therapists will work on improving their voice, how they use it and also their vocal quality.

What is voice?

Voice is the sound caused by the vibration of your vocal cords, when air passes through the voice box (larynx). A voice problem will occur when there is a problem with the mechanism which produces voice.

How can a voice problem impact on an individual's life?

An individual who has a voice problem will usually have difficulty using their voice to communicate effectively with others around them. A voice problem can present in mild to severe forms and may affect individuals in a variety of communication situations. A voice problem can impact on an individual's life in a variety of ways. A voice problem may affect an individual's ability to communicate effectively; this may lead to problems communicating in the work, educational and social environments. Voice problems may additionally cause social anxiety, stress and lack of confidence when communicating. The impact voice problems can have on a person's life will vary for each individual.

How can speech and language therapy improve voice?

Speech and language therapy will improve the voice of a person with a voice problem. Speech and language therapy will also maximise the individual's ability to communicate effectively. The speech and language therapist will improve an individual's vocal quality and use of voice in a variety of ways; these will differ depending on the severity of the voice problem and also the underlying cause or condition. Speech and language therapy will improve voice through:

  • Breathing and phonation exercises.
  • Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT)
  • Compensatory strategies
  • Voice therapy
  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication

What are the benefits of improving voice?

There are many benefits of improving an individual's voice. The main benefit of speech and language therapy is helping the individual to communicate more effectively. Improving an individual's voice will have other benefits including:

  • Allowing the individual to communicate more effectively with others around them.
  • Emotional benefits e.g. increasing self-esteem and self-confidence when communicating.
  • Allowing the individual to participate in everyday tasks which require effective communication.
  • Increasing the individual's ability to participate in social activities.
  • Improving their quality of life.
  • Helping them to access their educational and work environments to their full potential.
