Communication is fundamental when interacting in the work environment. Communication allows us to express and receive messages and is a key element in the working environment. When an individual's communication is disrupted it will often affect their ability to work effectively. Speech and language therapy helps to improve an individual's speech, language and communication abilities. When working with individuals who have speech, language and communication difficulties, our speech and language therapists will work on maximising their ability to communicate effectively and help them in returning to work.

How can a speech, language and communication difficulty prevent someone from going back to work?

There are a variety of speech, language and communication difficulties which can affect an individual's ability to return to work. An individual's speech, language and communication difficulty may be mild to severe and will affect each individual in different ways. Most professions place a high demand on the use of effective communication skills in the work environment. An individual with any speech, language or communication difficulty which affects their understanding and / their expressive communication may impact on their ability to work effectively and ability to return to work. Some professions which place high demands on the use of voice e.g. teaching and singing can also contribute to voice problems which may lead to the individual not being able to carry out their job effectively.

Having a speech, language and communication difficulty may also impact an individual emotionally e.g. they may lack self-confidence, have low self-esteem and depression. This can also lead to an individual not being able to return to work.

How can speech and language therapy help people with speech, language and communication problems get back to work?

The speech and language therapist will help to improve and develop an individual's speech, language and communication difficulty in helping them to communicate more effectively. The speech and language therapist will use a variety of management approaches in helping an individual communicate effectively to get back to work, this will depend on the individual's overall ability, the type of speech, language or communication difficulty they have and also the underlying cause or condition. Management approaches can include:

  • Training
  • Consultative approach
  • One to one therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Therapy programmes
