Early intervention is highly beneficial for individuals with speech, language and communication needs. Studies have found that the earlier an individual receives speech and language therapy, the better the outcome regarding their speech, language and communication abilities.

What is early intervention?

Early intervention is usually a term used for intervention which is received in the pre-school years. Early intervention is also intervention which is received at the earliest possible stage from the onset of a speech, language and communication difficulty.

Early intervention is most commonly associated with speech and language therapy received in the pre-school years for children with speech, language and communication needs. Early childhood intervention is a well-researched area of speech and language therapy, which has found that the earlier a child receives speech and language therapy the better the outcome for the child, regarding their speech, language, communication and also educational achievements. As children learn quickest in their pre-school years, this is an ideal time to receive speech and language therapy to help them improve and develop before entering the school environment, which will place a high demand on their language and communication skills.

For adults and older children with speech, language and communication difficulties it is has also been found that the earlier speech and language therapy is received and the more intensive the treatment is, the better the outcome will be for the individual, regarding their speech, language and communication needs.

What will early intervention involve?

For pre-school children with speech, language and communication difficulties it is important that they receive appropriate speech and language therapy as soon as possible. For a pre-school child with speech, language and communication needs, our speech and language therapists will carry out a thorough assessment in order to determine what their specific difficulty is. An initial assessment will help to decide what the most suitable speech and language therapy input will be for the child's specific needs. There are a variety of speech and language therapy services we can offer for pre-school children and also their parents or carers in ensuring they receive the most appropriate treatment as early as possible.

For adults and older children with speech, language and communication difficulties, our speech and language therapists will carry out an initial assessment to determine what speech and language therapy services that individual will need. Our speech and language therapists will ensure the individual receives an appropriate speech and language therapy service to meet their needs as early as possible.

Our speech and language therapists are dedicated to ensuring our clients receive the best possible outcome from speech and language therapy.
