Groups

Our speech and language therapists can provide group therapy for individuals with speech, language and communication difficulties. Our speech and language therapists can also provide group programmes for parents and carers regarding an individuals speech, language and communication needs.

What will group treatment involve?

Group treatment involves a group of individuals or a group of parents or carers. Group treatment will often involve individuals with similar speech, language or communication needs however this will vary depending on the purpose of the group. Groups vary from smaller more intense groups to larger groups. Larger groups may often be run by two speech and language therapists.

What types of group treatment are available?

There are many different types of group treatment available at speech and language therapy for both adult and child clients, also carers and parents. Different types of speech and language therapy groups can include:

  • Stroke rehabilitation groups
  • Social skills groups
  • Stuttering/ disorders of fluency groups
  • Pre-school communication groups
  • Carer/ parent communication groups
  • What are the benefits of group treatment?

    There are many benefits of group treatment and this can advantage both the individual and also their parents or carers. Benefits of group treatment can include:

  • Practising skills learnt in one to one therapy in the group environment.
  • Increasing self-esteem and confidence of the individuals ability to communicate with others.
  • A chance for individuals and their parents / carers to share their communication experiences with others.
  • Provides a support network.
