Social skills group

Our speech and language therapists offer social skills groups for individuals of all ages and abilities. Social skills groups help to support individuals with social communication difficulties and help to increase their use of social skills and communication. Social skills groups can be very beneficial and help to increase an individual's self-esteem, confidence and independence.

What are social skills group?

Social skills groups are support groups for individuals with social communication difficulties. Social skills groups will focus on helping individuals use social skills more effectively and help to increase their social communication.

Our social skills groups can vary in size, content and length of time and will depend on the specific needs of each individual and the group as a whole.

Social skills groups can include:

  • Social skills groups for children or adults with Asperger syndrome.
  • Using social skills at school / work.
  • School transition groups.
  • Communicating with others more effectively.
  • Conversation groups.
  • Working on non-verbal communication such as turn-taking, eye-contact, tone of voice and gesture.

For some individuals socialising can be very difficult and they may find it hard to make and maintain friends. Individuals may also find talking to other people difficult. Social skills groups provide the opportunity for individuals to meet new people with similar difficulties within a safe environment.

The time and location of each group will vary and will depend on the specific needs of each group. Activities within social skills groups will vary depending on the specific interests of group members. These groups are not structured and are not meant to be intimidating, they are an opportunity to practise social skills, share experiences and meet new people. The speech and language therapists will be there to support the individuals in the group and offer tips and ideas.
