What to expect

Health Professionals

Our speech and language therapists work with a range of health professionals to ensure that each patient receives the best possible outcome from therapy.

At speech and language therapy we work closely with a number of health professionals when assessing and treating children and adults with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties.

Many individuals with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties will commonly experience difficulties in other areas of their development e.g. physical difficulties, vision difficulties, hearing problems etc.

Our speech and language therapists work closely with the following health professionals:

  • Medical staff e.g. G.Ps and Consultants
  • Nurses
  • Audiologists
  • Health care assistants
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Dieticians
  • Health visitors

Working within a team is often referred to as multi-disciplinary team working and is commonly practiced by speech and language therapists.

Working closely with other professionals is an important aspect of achieving effective treatment for individuals with additional difficulties. Multi-disciplinary team working allows professionals to share information regarding the patient's difficulties and how they might be impacting on the patient's everyday life and also their speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties. Multi-disciplinary team working also allows the speech and language therapist to monitor how the individual is progressing in their treatment. Speech and language therapists will often provide support and advice to other health professionals regarding the individual's speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties.

Our speech and language therapist commonly work with other health professionals in providing the following services:
