What is Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT)?
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) is an intensive voice therapy for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions which affect voice. LSVT is carried out by an LSVT trained speech and language therapist and increases the quality of an individual’s voice.
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment is an intensive treatment programme which uses voice exercises to target vocal quality and intensity. LSVT is specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease who are having difficulty with the effectiveness of their voice. It is also used for other neurological problems resulting in voice problems.
LSVT aims to increase vocal loudness and increase the intelligibility of the individual’s speech.
A high percentage of individuals with Parkinson’s disease will often present with reduced loudness of their voice, vocal tremor, monotone, hoarseness and decreased intelligibility of their speech.
LSVT is an intensive programme and usually involves four one hour sessions a week, for one month. It requires the individual to be highly motivated when participating in therapy and the completion of take home tasks. LSVT involves a series of drilled vocal exercises and teaches the individual to be aware of their voice through sensory feedback.
